History

The Brazilian Terrier also known as Fox Paulistinha (The little fox from São Paulo) is one of the two Brazilian breeds recognized by FCI (the other one is the Fila Brasileiro) but there are more than 15 uniques breeds originally from in Brazil.

The most accepted origin of the Brazilian Terrier is remounted to the end of sec XVIII when sons of important farmers went back from Europe to Brazil as they completed the College education caring with them terriers that were mixed with local dogs; these new dogs succeeded in farm lifestyle. Soon aroused a new breed and in São Paulo many breeders started to rise and set up that new standard.

It is presumed that the Parson Russel Terrier, the Jack Russel Terrier and the Fox Terrier were between the breeds that originated Brazilian Terrier.

That new dog demonstrated to be a very skilled hunter of small rodents, being used to protect warehouses and ships against small pests. Is said that the Brazilian Terrier were more able than cats catching rats. That hunting ability is very known even today;  small birds are easily grasped by this attentive dog, in pack  as well in lone hunting.

The standard was set up in 1920 but the final FCI recognition came only in 1995.

Today the Brazilian Terrier is being largelly exported to many countries because its versatile use as a hunter, companion dog, extreme intelligence, resistance and agility performance.
